He pulls no punches in discussing the making of the films, particularly when it comes to the struggles of the first picture, and neither does he shy away from addressing his critics, as when he defends his decision to cast his daughter Sofia as Michael's daughter in part three. Coppola, who struggled fiercely as a young filmmaker during the making of the first film, is as engaging a commentator on these three movies as anyone else out there. The tale of the Corleone family, vicious mobsters fighting for power and money and living a skewed version of the American Dream along the way, is ultimately about family, how heir apparent Michael slowly turns into a monster for the perceived good of his clan and alienates everyone around him in the process. On the Track: Francis Ford Coppola (writer-director-producer) Why it Rocks: For many, Francis Ford Coppola's first two Godfather films remain the greatest motion pictures of the modern age, having lost none of their luster since the original debuted in 1972 and despite the less-than-great third installment which followed 16 years after part two. Cameron, Hurd, and the rest pop in and out during the discussion, providing a focused chat that is a lean, mean, fighting machine - much like Ellen Ripley herself. His Aliens Laserdisc was voluminous in its bonus features for the time, and this commentary continues that mindset, standing as a premiere example of the 'edited' style of track. Dating back to the Laserdisc days, Cameron has proven his devotion to using the home video format as a means of sharing with the viewer the process of how he makes his movies. And while Scott and his crew's commentary on the first film is fine, and DVD extra features legend director David Fincher is missing from the Alien 3 track (long story) - and the less said about Alien Resurrection the better - it's Cameron and company's in-depth track for this film that takes the acid-blood cake. James Cameron, who at that point in his career had only made The Terminator two years earlier, upped the ante on the science fiction genre in a big way with this film, sparing no technical detail or thrilling plot or character turn along the way.
